11 Weeks Old!

photo 2.JPG

Yesterday, Logan turned 11 weeks old. I’ve been taking more pictures on my iPhone than the real camera. It’s just too easy and always by my side. Most noticeable for changes are that Logan is filling out more, especially in his tummy and cheeks, and is making more cooing sounds, or really, goo. He notices more objects near and far, like toys, lights, the ceiling fan, and anything outside.

Lily is also warming up to Logan too. She has been sleeping in his room more during the night.

Most of his newborn clothes are too small, and even some 0-3 clothes. He is still wearing newborn sized nightgowns, which were a great thing to buy. We have five and we go through one a night. I am surprised we haven’t moved up to the next size, but we love them!

I also found a new collage app that is so fun and easy. See top picture and this one below. I captured some of his funny faces!

Bye bye!

On Breastfeeding

I have been a breastfeeding mother for almost three months now. Before I had Logan, I didn’t really have expectations about breastfeeding, but I wanted to try it because “breast is best.” There was no reason my body wouldn’t cooperate, and I had no reason not to do it, so because it’s best for baby, I wanted to do it.

I exclusively breastfed Logan for two months. I am very proud of that and amazed at what breast milk can do. Its benefits are incredible, and it is actually very easy. It’s always available, no bottles needed, it is free, always the perfect temperature, and the perfect food for baby. I had already nourished him for nine months in the womb, and if he needed my body for longer, it seemed logical. Why not do it?

After two months, I realized that breastfeeding is actually a lifestyle and more of a burden than I am willing to continue for the long term future. You have to literally sit with baby for an hour of every three (he’s a slow eater, it takes us a long time). I have to organize our schedule so that I’m home when he needs to eat, and it got very time consuming and limiting when I was ready to get out of the house. Because nursing in public isn’t really for me, I like to be home to feed him. That left very little time to get out of the house to run errands either with him, or by myself.

I did start using bottles daily for him so I could escape briefly and food was available for him at home. While bottles are a great alternative, it messes with my own body because the milk is ready for the taking, but baby isn’t there. Luckily, my milk supply is very strong and the only downside was that my boobs felt like they were about to explode (haha, that’s all). Bottles also take extra work of pumping and preparing them and planning for that.

Around Week 9, we introduced formula at the 7 p.m. feeding. I felt that Logan needed a little oomph to help him feel fuller and maybe it would help him sleep longer too. He would always be starving when he ate, no matter the time or how many ounces I could give him. He’s a hungry boy. I have a lot of motherly guilt on switching since breastmilk is working for him. He doesn’t seem to notice a difference, and happily takes whatever he is given, from whomever is holding a bottle.

Now I say he is 83% breastfed. I don’t know when I will wean him more by replacing another feeding with formula. I still really enjoy breastfeeding him and the time we spend together. It is much more special than I imagined. Even though it does take a long time, it’s actually a nice peaceful time where he is happy and I can relax too. Because I can’t decide what to do next, I think it means I’m not yet ready to wean more.

I don’t have a specific goal of how long I’ll continue to breastfeed. For me, I think when it becomes more frustrating and burdensome then I’ll wean more.

Happy birthday Jeffrey!

Happy birthday Blog!

I have been meaning to post about my blog’s birthday since the beginning of May. Like most things, I didn’t get around to it.

Happy 2nd birthday dear blog! I have been writing almost daily for two years, it’s hard to believe. I actually started on April 29, 2010.

I’ve written about races, healthy cooking, decadent baking, vacations, pregnancy and baby. I decided to run my first half marathon while writing, and this blog led me to a lot of freelance projects that I did for about a year.

I also found an interest in photography and learned how to use a fancy DSLR camera. I went to two blogging conferences (one in San Francisco and one in Washington DC).

Blogging has been a fun outlet of creativity and has helped me become more adventurous in the kitchen, and has connected me with like-minded people. I have learned so much about food and fitness, and lately pregnancy and parenting by reading other blogs that I found through my own.

Who knows where my blog will go this year. As you’ve seen it’s harder to find the time. Thanks for reading and coming back each day!

A day in the life–mom edition

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a day in the life of a six week old. Then I started thinking how my days are his days, but it’s also important to me to have some time for me too. Now at ten weeks old, I’m getting out of the house more, with and without Logan. My wake up call is still dictated by him, but some things during the day are just for me now.

photo-17.jpg

6-7 a.m.: We hear baby cries in the monitor and I go into his room for his first meal of the day. It still takes about 45 minutes to feed him. I catch up on emails, Facebook, Twitter, or if I’m not in the mood, I’ll watch a TV show I recorded.

7-8 a.m.: We recently got a new crib mobile now that Logan enjoys looking at things more. I put him back in his crib and turn on the mobile. He kicks his legs and smiles for 20 minutes. I either go back to lay in bed, pump, or get dressed for the day (in exercise clothes because it’s already 85-90 degrees).

8 a.m.-10:30 a.m.: This is the part of the day for me! First I get Logan back to sleep in his swing, then I eat breakfast, sometimes even at the same time as Jeffrey (!), write a blog, upload pictures, read my Google Reader, check email, write thank you notes, do work for my real job, or leave to exercise and run errands if our nanny is here (two days a week).

10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.: Feed baby and watch TV or read for me. Or if nanny is here, I am still running errands and he gets a bottle.

11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: Walk Lily with Logan, play on play mat or sometimes we run errands together. I have found it’s sometimes easier to get him to nap while we are out and about than it is for him to fall asleep at home. A win for both of us if I don’t mind taking him where I go. It is also exercise to carry him in and out of places plus his gear.

1 p.m. – 2 p.m.: Feed baby, catch up on phone emails, calls, etc. or watch TV.

2 p.m. – 4 p.m.: A second great window in the day where we are starting to be more social with friends, a play date, or run another errand. I am trying now to get out of the house either with or without him. If we stay in, we walk Lily again, play on the mat, and hope he takes a short nap. Sometimes we have friends over.

4 p.m.-5 p.m.: Feed baby, play on phone, watch TV or read a book.

5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.: This is the time I run around like a crazy person. I shower if I haven’t yet, get Lily’s dinner ready, dinner for me and Jeffrey ready, walk Lily again, clean Logan’s room and get his bath supplies ready and his room ready for bed. I have started putting him back in his crib to watch the mobile for another 20 minutes if he’s in a good mood. Sometimes I walk outside with him in the Bjorn, or sometimes I have to sit on the couch and just rock him to calm him. It’s a stressful part of the day, and it’s always better when Jeffrey is home in time to help!

6:30 p.m.-7 p.m.: Bath for Logan, I get him and his room ready for bed.

7 p.m.-8 p.m.: Feed Logan, read, no TV on, listen to quiet music, do bedtime routine.

8 p.m.-9:15 p.m.: Finally another short time for me. We get in bed real early in this house! We catch up on TV and unwind for the night. We talk to Lily and just enjoy the quiet and getting through another day. I pump again in hopes I can make it until he wakes up.

9:15 p.m.: I go to bed really early since our days start early and we are up for an hour or so in the night.

Sometime between 1-4 a.m.: Baby wakes up to eat. I either pump while Jeffrey does a bottle to save a little time, or lately he has been sleeping later and I’ll end up just feeding him myself.

Then it starts over again!

Weekend

It still amazes me that I am a mom and have another person in the house to care for. My brain has changed, I don’t remember things like I used to, and I find myself reminding myself to think about something because I don’t even have time to think properly. Like “remember to think about what to pack for Logan for Aspen,” and “remember to think about planning dinner before you go to the grocery on Sunday.” And like I’ve read about, “Remember to go to the bathroom!” I don’t even have time to think properly!

Anyway, that’s the roundabout way of saying that it’s hard to find time to do much of anything for myself or the house, like write a proper blog post. Here are some iPhone pictures from the last few days.

photo 1.JPG

Logan has begun noticing things further away than right in front of him. We added a mobile to his crib and he loves kicking his feet and smiling at it and making sounds. It is so darn cute! We put him in there to look at it right after his early morning feeding so I can wake up a little more, and around the 5-6 p.m. witching hour. It lasts about 20 minutes, but that’s better than nothing!

photo 2.JPG

Last Thursday, I had an event for work at night and Jeffrey was in charge of bath, bottle and bed for the first time by himself! He did a great job. Look at the cute little face.

photo 3.JPG

On Friday in honor of Facebook going public, Logan donned his Facebook onesie!

photo 4.JPG

And then on Saturday, Logan went on his first sleepover at Poppy and JJ’s house (Jeffrey’s parents). He spent about 28 hours away from us while we took a short trip to the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop overnight. I think everyone had a great time but we are glad to be back together.

photo 5.JPG

I thought of Logan frequently in the form of about 35 ounces of pumped milk that I brought home for him. It was really nice to get away for a short while, not be pinned to a chair for one hour of every three, and actually sleep a little more! Thanks to Poppy and JJ for taking care of him!

We hope you had a good weekend too!

Body After Baby Part 2

Since I last wrote just a few weeks ago, I have been back to the gym regularly and back to a studio I like here.

My current goal is four days a week of exercise and then lots of around-the-house exercise everyday, like lifting my little 11 pound weight and 10 pound doggy, pushing a stroller in the heat while walking the dog, and also the bouncing and running up and down stairs I do all day.

IMG_7503.JPG

For the gym-based exercise, my current plan is to do two days of Define Body, which I started one year ago, and also did through my pregnancy from about Week 13-30. For right now, I am really enjoying the classes and being able to not modify the movements. Because it takes more planning to just get to the classes, I really enjoy them more knowing my time alone is valuable! The other thing I like about Define is that it’s not hardcore like CrossFit and I leave feeling refreshed and energized and not beat down.

For the other two days, I am going back to our regular gym and doing half cardio on the treadmill (walking only) or elliptical and half strength training with free weights, bar bells and body weight movements like squats and lunges. And stretching–I am very stiff.

I am hoping this will be my plan for a while. Knowing I only get four days and a short time to get away really makes me enjoy my time and get in a good, fast workout.

As far as the scale, I am within seven pounds of my pre-preg0 weight. However, I know that it may not all come off until I stop breastfeeding. Your body holds onto a good amount of fat to help produce milk. Many people say up to five pounds waits to come off until you’re done.

Logan–Two Months

IMG_7502.JPG

On Sunday, we celebrated my first Mother’s Day as a mommy and Logan’s two month birthday. It was so nice to have all of Logan’s grandparents here to see him this weekend. Lily enjoyed the company too.

IMG_7485.JPG

Last week, Logan went back to the doctor for his two month check up and three shots that allow him to go out into the world now. We don’t have to be couped up in the house! He weights 11 pounds and is 22.25 inches long. That means he’s gained 3 pounds and 2.25 inches in two months. Way to go, Logan!

IMG_7503.JPG

Also new this month, Logan is gaining better head control and can smile and is starting to coo. He is starting to notice toys and follow people’s faces more. He’s growing up! He is still wearing mostly 0-3 clothes and some that say “3 months.” He also went up to size 1 diapers.

IMG_7515.JPG

Logan’s eating and sleeping are still the same as Month 1. We were pretty lucky that Logan has been a great nighttime sleeper since the beginning. He still wakes once per night between 1-4 a.m., and then wakes up between 6-7 a.m. followed by a good morning nap from around 8:30-10:30 a.m. After that, he’s awake for most of the day with one or two short naps. Basically, if I don’t get what I want done by 10:30 a.m., it won’t get done until the next day!

IMG_7524.JPG

His eating is also about the same as the first month. Still roughly every 3 hours, except overnight when there are two long stretches. In Month 2, we started doing more bottles to let me get out of the house more, especially in the mornings to run errands and exercise. He is still an EBF (exclusively breastfed) baby in Month 2.

We had a four day growth spurt around Week 6 where he woke up around 11 p.m. for a few nights in a row, and then at 5 a.m. Both times were for milk, which meant an extra feeding on those days. Once that spurt ended, he slept 10 straight hours…and that hasn’t happened again since.

IMG_7528.JPG

Looking forward to more fun things in Month 3! This month brings his first overnight sleepover at his Houston grandparents, and his first plane ride and vacation in Colorado!

Logan Lately

Just a quick post to share some pictures. It is truly hard to find 10 minutes to write a post with pictures! Our weekends are jam packed and I barely find a minute to sit down. We had a great Mother’s Day weekend. I’ll post those pictures when we upload them soon! It was also Logan’s two month birthday yesterday, so there’s lots to share when I get to it!

photo 1.jpg

Two weekends ago, we went out to dinner and Logan stayed home. This is my favorite new family pic! It was nice to get out with adults and eat at a normal time.

photo 2.jpg

Capturing part of a smile sitting in the bouncer. He has filled out this 0-3 outfit so much!

photo 3.jpg

Grandma Soupy came to visit for the weekend. Logan is always happy in Soupy’s lap.

photo 4.jpg

We also went to our friend Nate’s first birthday party. Logan went on a train for the first time! He liked the breeze and motion.

photo 5.jpg

And Logan saying “hey there” after his bath in his doggie jammies! Happy and ready for some milk!

That’s it for today, more to come!

Likes and Dislikes

Logan is 8 weeks old! So much personality is coming out, and we are learning more about him all the time. Now 8 weeks into this parenting thing, we have found a few things that Logan likes and go through each of these daily to make him happy.

IMG_7458.JPG

Likes:

  • MILK–Logan could eat and eat and eat. He likes milk from anyone in any form. We don’t have a picky eater on our hands.
  • His swing–still loves to nap here.
  • Bathtime–he likes the tub and the water running over him, but he doesn’t like getting out of the tub.
  • Laying on our laps–he loves to lay on his side on our laps with his pacifier in while we rock our legs.
  • The outdoors–not sure if he realizes how hot it is, but he loves the sounds and motion of being outside. It is sometimes instantly calming. Hooray for summertime. He likes strolling in his stroller or the Bjorn or just sitting in someone’s lap in a chair on the patio.
  • Kicking his legs–he is a man on the move! He kicks his legs all the time, we don’t know where he’s going!

Dislikes:

There really isn’t much he dislikes. He really only cries when he needs to poop, burp or is hungry, and we are getting good at knowing the cries.

Sometimes he dislikes sleeping in the swing or the Bjorn. It’s hard to figure out sometimes! But the reasons are always one of the above.

Also–happy anniversary to my parents today! 31 years!
