Things on my mind–Travel edition

Jeffrey makes fun of me that I can’t fall asleep because I can’t turn off my brain. Well here are some things that I ponder about all day (and night) lately.

  • We are going out of town on our first trip with the baby, how many diapers will a baby need for 10 days? In addition to that, how much milk do I take on the airplane, or do I just feed him myself? I probably would have a milk explosion if I don’t feed him or pump from the time I leave our house until we get to the hotel. Breastfeeding is fun.
  • What is entailed in shipping breastmilk? Worth it? (answer is no.)
  • How are we going to get through the airport with all of the following just as carry ons: Stroller without car seat (checking that), Baby Bjorn with baby, diaper bag, Boppy pillow, small cooler of frozen milk, plus our own carry ons with computer, camera, cords, change of clothes for everyone, dinner.
  • What time zone will the baby end up on? I don’t want 4:30 or 5 am to be the start of the day for him and me!
  • What book should I read next on my Kindle?
  • Will I ever sleep through the night again?
  • What’s for dinner this week?
  • Did Lily eat today?
  • When am I going to shower tomorrow and do I need to do the laundry again?
These are just some of the things I think about all day long! And the reasons I don’t have time to cook or bake or blog anything too insightful!

Theres a grocery store where we’re going that has diapers. And just breast feed on the plane! When else will you get to do that? It’s another version of the mile high club.

  2. I just did my first 2-week trip with air travel with my 2 month old. My tips:

    1. Diapers: Bring enough for a couple of days. Buy a pack of diapers at your destination. We went through about a 40-pack in a week. You will appreciate not wasting valuable suitcase real estate on diapers.

    2. Feeding on the plane: Breastfeed on the plane. Don’t fool with bottles. In this case, it’s precious carry-on real estate…

    3. Luggage: Check a bag. We don’t usually check bags, because we refuse to pay $25 to have to wait at baggage claim when we land, but with a baby, it was so worth it to travel light on the plane. Plus, we couldn’t fit everything into our carry-on. And that was with me barely packing any clothes, because I planned to do laundry multiple times while we were gone.

    4. Time zones: I think you’ll be surprised by how easily your baby adjusts to new time zones. A couple of days of struggle, but they eventually get it. It’s mostly whatever time the sun says it is for them. :)

I was so worried about traveling with a little baby, but it was actually pretty easy. The real challenge is going to be as we get closer to toddlerhood. Ugh. I don’t even want to think about flying cross country at Thanksgiving… You guys will do fine. :) Have a great trip!

  3. Breastfeed on the plane. Carrying pumped milk seems like a headache unless you really must…especially with TSA.

Why are you taking the boppy on the plane?

I only packed enough diapers for the amount of travel time and doubled it. Then picked up diapers at the destination.

My kids always adjusted better to time zones than I did and back again.

    • a friend said to take the boppy so the baby can lay on it on the plane. I also still use it to nurse him. I am planning to take one bottle of milk with me. He takes 45 min to feed so I don’t want to get stuck either before we board or before we land having just started to feed him.
