Baby’s First Foods, Part 1

Leading up to “starting solids,” as it’s called when babies start eating real food in addition to milk, I read some books and websites about how to start the process. I read Baby-Led Weaning, which was popular among other mom blogs I read, and also a chapter in Baby 411 about starting solids. I also read a little on BabyCenter and asked friends about it.

Overall, I was left confused. At our four month pediatrician appointment, our doctor said I can begin starting Logan on rice cereal or oatmeal. I wanted to get our sleep situation figured out before I added a new hurdle, so I decided to wait until he was five months. We also had a good thing going with his bottles, and he is very healthy with just that. Babies also don’t “need” the nutrition from food for many more months. It takes quite a while for them to actually learn to eat.

The theory behind Baby Led Weaning (aka Baby Led Solids)  is that when babies are ready, they should learn to feed themselves. BLW recommends starting around 6 months, knowing that it’s all for play until about 9 months when baby gets good at handling food themselves. There’s no need for purees. Babies should experiment with food, learn how to put things in their mouth, and learn how to chew and swallow. It’s also a shared family activity where baby can eat what their parents eat, just in smaller bites. Purees confuse them and are unnecessary. I asked our doctor, he had never heard of it, and I decided to keep reading other ways to introduce food.

I bought a box of baby oatmeal and decided we would try that. It was awful looking–soupy and runny and smelly (you mix it with formula or breastmilk), Logan thought I was trying to poison him and kicked and screamed. We did this about 3 times, many days apart. We then decided to skip oatmeal and move on to fruits and vegetables. Who wants their first food to be from a box anyway? Right when he turned five months, I decided a jar of squash was a good first food. Surprisingly, Logan loved it! He was all business when eating. Would open his mouth, swallow and then whine for more. Wonderful! We have a good eater!

photo 1.JPG

The unofficial rule of solids is to do the same food for 3-4 days to make sure the baby doesn’t have a reaction. We did our squash and he loved it.

Then I moved onto jarred sweet potato. Yuck! Logan would kick and scream and get very, very mad. We tried carrots. Pears. Homemade sweet potato. He hated it all. This lasted about a week. I was confused. Then, Logan started school. I asked his teacher if she could try feeding him. For her, he did great! Ate everything I sent. Hmmm, he is playing me.

So now, we are still moving through foods, trying new ones every few days and finding things Logan likes. I don’t rule out any foods and will go back to them eventually, or send them to school. I am doing a mix of jarred foods that I send to school and some homemade that I’ll feed him at home on the weekends. I hope to make more at home as I learn what he likes, but jarred is good for starting.

photo 2.jpg

Back to my plan of feeding him–For this month, we will do all purees. He is too young for BLW anyway. I would like him to get used to tastes and textures and practice swallowing with a spoon. Around 6 months, I think I will try “sticks” of food like sweet potato, broccoli, avocado, zucchini, etc. that are steamed and able to be gummed, and let him start playing with that. The main fear of BLW is choking, but if you do the program as they recommend, the baby should gag before they choke. And apparently the gag reflex is farther forward in the mouth than an adult so the baby won’t get food stuck. If he isn’t ready, we’ll continue with purees and try again later. My goal is for him to move onto “sticks” and small bites of steamed food sooner than later and to keep exposing him to new fruits and vegetables.

Any foods your babies liked more than others? When did they stop purees and move on to table food in small pieces?

Weekend

photo-33.jpg

We had a nice little weekend at home, the only one in the next month that is actually quiet and normal where we are both in town the whole time. Football season is upon us. I experimented more with making baby food in the Beaba Babycook cooker, which I need to write about soon. I also meal-planned for this coming week and hope to continue making dinner at home a few nights. We made two dinners at home last week and I baked cookies. I think we are adapting to our new work/school schedule just fine.

photo 1.jpg

Logan spent Friday night with his Houston grandparents, while Mom and Dad actually went to a MOVIE and dinner. First one since at least last December probably. It wasn’t even a good movie, but nice to have time to see one. We missed the little boy though. Our house was very quiet.

photo 2.jpg

We also started the baby proofing process. We don’t have plans right now to put up gates and start child locking all cabinets, but we did want to replace our iron coffee table with something softer. We found this coffee table a few weeks ago and it was delivered on Saturday afternoon. Much better! Now we aren’t scared to have Logan on our laps in the living room or rolling on the floor in there. Next up is to replace the rug.

A week of firsts

Isn’t every week a week of firsts with a baby? There is always something new and something we are doing “for the first time.” This past week has been a big one though. Logan went to school! Mom went back to work too. I started back two Mondays ago and Logan went this past Monday. Here are some of the firsts we have done this week:

photo-32.jpg

  • First day of school for Logan
  • First day back to work for me
  • First new morning routines for baby and me (everyone dressed, fed, bags packed, dog walked and out the door by 7:45 am)
  • First new afternoon routine for me (finding time to walk doggy, organize for next day, find or make dinner, pick up baby)
  • First new evening routine for me (prep breakfast and lunch for me, make and clean dinner, plus baby bedtime duties)
  • First time doing two full days and nights by myself! Jeffrey was gone for work. Thank goodness Logan sleeps through the night.
  • First time for Logan trying real food

School makes a baby tired. He has fallen asleep so easily lately.

We started food last week and it hasn’t gone so well at home. I am not really concerned, he will eat eventually! I’ll write another time about how food is going, but he is eating better at school than at home. Apparently, he has me all figured out. Lily must have taught him that.

Sip’n and See’n

IMG_8168.JPG

Two weekends ago we went to Dallas for a long weekend. I am from Dallas and had been away from the city for 13 months. It was my longest time to be away from Dallas in my whole life, probably by months and months. We see my parents plenty often in Houston or on trips, but I just hadn’t been home in that long. And Logan had many people wanting to meet him.

IMG_8119.JPG

On a Thursday, Logan and I took a flight by ourselves to Dallas. Being that it was a one hour flight, it was just fine. He happily took a bottle that lasted most of the flight and then he jumped on my lap and smiled at people. Jeffrey and Lily joined us by car on Thursday night.

IMG_8141.JPG

Then Logan made himself right at home with the slew of toys and clothes that my mom had waiting for him. We had a little party for him on Saturday that we mistakenly put during his afternoon nap time. We planned the party back in June, and I didn’t really know when he would nap. He was a trooper and was very fun and happy.

IMG_1794.jpg

Then on Sunday we drove back to Houston, which was our first long car trip together. We left after his 10 a.m. bottle and stopped once at 1 p.m. to feed him again, then kept going. He slept parts of the drive, but not really long stretches. Then he slept great that night since he had such a busy weekend.

IMG_8178.jpg

Little boy needed his beauty rest too. He held onto his new football the whole time. We’ll be back in Dallas at the end of September and hope to have more fun again then!

Four Years

0770.jpg

It’s been four wonderful years, and our family has grown from two to four. We added Lily the dog and Baby Logan. Hard to believe I was just 24 when we got married in Dallas. Now I am 28, live in Houston, have a different house, different job, and the best doggy and baby we could ever have dreamed about. Life is pretty great.

Our wedding was just the beginning of our lives together, and this past year has been the most exciting yet.

IMG_1070.jpg

I hope it continues to be just as wonderful with even more great memories and experiences.

In the kitchen

Remember when I used to post new recipes and pretty pictures of food everyday? Gosh, I used to have more time and less responsibilities. If you were wondering if we ever eat at home anymore, the answer is yes. Many of the meals aren’t “blogworthy,” meaning they aren’t that exciting or look pretty on camera in my opinion.

photo 2.JPG

We have managed to get into a little groove of cooking if we plan ahead, especially now that Logan is easier to get to sleep at night. Jeffrey and I even eat at the same time! Together! However, we don’t cook at home as often as I’d like.

I am sure now that I am back to work, it will take even more planning ahead to get home-cooked meals on the table, even if they are simple. We did end up buying a slow cooker cookbook and tagged a lot of recipes to try. Hopefully we will give that a try and actually like the dishes. My goal is to roughly plan the week over the weekend so I can grocery shop on Sundays and not have to pick up as many times during the week or be at a loss of what’s for dinner each weeknight.

IMG_1739.jpg

The other challenge is lunch. Lunch is my least favorite meal of the day, and now at work, I have to go back to packing it. Yuck, smelly tupperware and boring salads. I dread packing lunches. At home for the past five months, I have eaten either leftovers from dinner, or open-faced sandwiches like the one above with hummus, avocado and cheese. I see many of these and PBJ’s in my future.

No real point to this post, just letting you know that we are cooking and hope to get better at it too!

Five Months

Five months seems like we are really well into this baby thing. Logan is definitely becoming less of a baby and more of a little boy. His personality is really developing and he is so much fun. He is cooing and babbling more, smiling all the time, and crying a whole lot less than when he was an itty bitty baby. It is rare now that we are stumped with what is wrong or what we can do to make him happy. There are few things he dislikes, and he is exploring more all the time.

IMG_8075.jpg

In the last month, so much has changed! We had a great trip to Florida with friends, and just this past weekend we went to Dallas. Logan is now “sleep trained” and we are all sleeping great at night. He even has better naps and is happier overall during the day.

IMG_1717.jpg

He started sitting in his stroller facing forward without the car seat adapter, we opened up the BOB stroller for future longer walks when the weather gets nicer, and he started loving his Jumperoo. It’s his favorite thing right now. We also opened up the high chair, but haven’t used it yet, or started solids, but that’s another story.

IMG_8085.JPG

He smiles all the time, talks, pays attention to books, to me when I talk to him, and always follows me around a room with his eyes.

IMG_8088.JPG

At his last doctor’s appointment at 4.5 months old, he weighed 16 lbs, 11 ounces and was 25 inches tall. He was in the 75% for weight and 40% for height. Sounds about right!

IMG_8101.jpg

Lily is also doing well with her new brother. She still watches him, sits by him, and sits with us when he gets a bottle. We all take walks together, and she is very sweet to him. Mostly, she loves his toys.

IMG_8105.JPG

This next one is a big one (aren’t they all?). Logan goes to school and mommy goes back to work!

Sleeping Beauty

IMG_1408.jpg

I promise this is the end of the posts on sleep. There is nothing sweeter than a sleeping baby. I realized I had taken a few pictures of Logan sleeping over the last few months, and it’s interesting to see how his sleep has changed, and of course, how he has grown! The picture above is somewhere around two months old, I think. We used to swaddle and put two wedges around him.

IMG_1663.jpg

This is what he looked like in the same sized swaddles when he would bust out of them and we knew it was time to say adieu.

IMG_1604.jpg

How much more comfy does this look?! This particular nap was after a birthday party when he had so much fun, he didn’t even wake up coming out of his car seat.

IMG_1744.jpg

And after 10 long days of sleep training, this is how Logan naps now. Happily on his belly.

Or he wedges himself between the bumpers.

Sleep Part 3

IMG_1737.jpg

It’s all smiles in this house. We finally feel like we are coming up for air and even feel rested. I even made a list of things to cook to get back in the school mode, am trying to get Logan and me organized for us both to go to school, and am finishing up summer projects.

After trying every suggestion we heard about infant sleep, we finally got Logan to learn to sleep  on his own and through the night. And fall asleep for naps on his own too. Hallelujah! What worked? Cry it out. I know, I can’t believe it. It was definitely a last resort, but it really wasn’t as bad as we expected.

IMG_1734.jpg

The final night of misery was last Wednesday when Logan was extremely hard to put to sleep at 7 p.m. and then woke up two hours after he finally fell asleep at 8:30. We could not get him back to bed and after almost two hours of being awake (it was then after midnight), we put him down to cry. We set a 45 minute limit and covered our heads with the covers. Thirty-five minutes later, he was asleep. It wasn’t perfect, he woke up again a few hours later, but by Thursday morning for his nap, we did it again and he fell asleep within an hour (mostly talking, then crying), same with his afternoon nap quicker, same with bedtime that night within 20 minutes…and he slept until morning when he woke up happy. By the weekend, the crying was minimal and the naps were nice and long.

There are many variations of “cry it out,” but we did the more extreme where we don’t “shuffle” out of the room. We said goodnight, put him down, and walked away. We watched the monitor the whole time, and the crying was around 20 minutes or less each time. For some naps, I went back to pat his back and give him the pacifier, but that was it…no rocking, swaying, etc. He learned to put himself to sleep.

IMG_1743.JPG

He sleeps happy on his belly, even though he can’t roll to his back yet. I lay him on his back and he quickly rolls to his belly. His naps have been longer too–an added bonus. Breaking the swaddle has not been pleasant, but hopefully we are over the hump!

IMG_1744.jpg

On Saturday night, he went down with less than two minutes of crying, more like whining, and slept perfectly until 7 a.m. We know there will be many less-than-perfect nights, but we are so happy that he can go to sleep on his own. Glad that battle is behind us!

Weekend

photo 1.jpg

We had a great weekend at home. We solved our sleep problem and all had some nice, restful nights. More on that later this week. I even baked some scones and we cooked dinner on Sunday night for friends. We took a family trip to Central Market on Saturday and Logan loved it. He is becoming less of a baby and more of a little boy. It’s a lot of fun now!

photo 2.jpg

So glad I made some time for baking. I had no occasion for these, but just felt like cooking something sweet. It was this recipe, Orange Chocolate Chip Scones, that I last made almost a year ago in circle form this time instead of triangle. I also made some little raw chocolate chip bites to keep in the freezer for snacks or dessert.

photo 3.JPG

On Saturday night, we went to the Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw concert called Brothers of the Sun Tour. It was really fun and they are awesome entertainers.  They each played over 90 minutes separately and then a few songs together. Really cool. They are two of my favorite country stars and I remember listening to Tim’s CD in my Jeep when I was 16. Long time ago!

photo 4.jpg

That is Kenny being lifted over the crowd to the stage. Amazing how no one uses real cameras anymore, just iPhones.

Hard to believe summer is about over! We have one more weekend trip this weekend and then I go back to work and Logan goes to school. I really can’t believe it’s been almost five months and the time has come to go back!
