Destin Again

IMG_8329.JPG

Hello there! We were at the beach this weekend. If it looks like we were just here, we were three weekends ago. This time we came with two couples, one from Dallas and one from Austin.

IMG_8317.JPG

We beached, pooled, ate, and shopped a little.

 IMG_8331.JPG

Best friends forever.

IMG_8332.JPG

My favorite activity, as usual, was our evening in Seaside. I love Seaside.

IMG_8337.JPG

It is just the cutest little community on the beach with kids running around, cute homes, and great and casual restaurants.

IMG_8339.JPG

All six of us.

IMG_8341.JPG

At a restaurant in Seaside called Great Southern.

IMG_8346.JPG

The last night, we cooked in. We made grilled snapper, grilled corn, green beans and roasted potatoes. It is fun to cook in! So relaxing and easy.

IMG_8360.jpg

Jeffrey on the grill.

IMG_8361.jpg

And Sharon made guacamole to start the night.

IMG_8364.JPG

Corn on the cob on the grill. We used an Ina Garten recipe. Peel husks halfway and brush with melted butter. Replace husks and grill five minutes per side for 20 minutes. Peel husks and sprinkle with salt. Eat!

IMG_8373.JPG

Hanging out and enjoying the night!

IMG_8380.JPG

We are done with the beach this year, but not trips! That never ends. We are, however, home for three weekends! Hooray! Hope you had a great weekend too!

It’s tough being us…

We’re back in Florida! See you when we get back!

Weekend in Dallas

IMG_8302.jpg

This weekend, we were on the road again! On Thursday, I drove to Dallas with Lily for a wedding on Saturday. Jeffrey had a work retreat and joined us on Saturday, then we all drove back to Houston on Sunday. Lots of logistics with planes and cars and packing! Everyone has a bag, including Lily!

I didn’t take my big camera, it is just too bulky for a short weekend trip. I also didn’t really take many pictures. I started playing with the iPhone app, Instagram, in the photo below. I don’t really understand why the app is so popular. It’s cool, but not the coolest thing ever. Not cool enough for how popular it is, I guess. I also get tired of having so many networks where you can follow people and be followed. I like Facebook and Twitter, and recently added Pinterest, and also like gchatting. Why do I need more ways to follow people?

While in Dallas, I went to Northpark Mall three times, once each day. It is my favorite mall, there is just lots to see and great restaurants. One day I didn’t buy anything, just had lunch. It’s easy to park, it’s clean and cool, it is a complete square, and it has every store you need in one mall. Are you listening, Houston Galleria? Your L shape kills me. And it’s just so hot inside. And hard to park. And hard to get there. Ok enough…

The wedding on Saturday had these cute photo booths. I think they make cute little things to take to work. I’ll be putting mine in my office this week!

And finally, to make up for having no good photos to share, I took a picture of what I had in my purse, because who isn’t nosy about that? The only thing missing from this photo is my phone, which I took the picture with. The Matchsticks were just for an emergency, the dress was new, and you never know when you’ll need some tape!

Of course back to Lily, on Sunday morning, she was more than ready to go back to Houston. She had a nice weekend, but never gets too much rest in Dallas. She is so busy having fun and playing and making sure she isn’t missing something. She hopped right in the car and on the console, where she slept most of the car ride home.

I had Pinkberry while I was in Dallas, a new flavor called Salted Caramel. It reminded me of Coffee ice cream. We also picked up Rudy’s BBQ on the way back to Houston for lunch and dinner. Weekend of good eating has ended, and begins again on Thursday back in Florida!

Unpluggin’

Over the weekend, I was pretty unplugged from the Internet and blogging. I didn’t take pictures of food, I didn’t create recipes, I didn’t think about what I should  make this week. I just sat on the beach listening to the ocean and enjoyed perfect beach conditions. I read magazines and my Kindle, took barefoot walks with sand between my toes, ate dinner at 9 p.m., and watched the sun set each night.

Holiday weekends are meant for getting away from the computer, enjoying the outdoors, and being with friends and family.

Normally I have posts ready to go for the week, but I don’t this week. I remembered that there are really special moments and being on the computer should be for recapping and sharing stories, (and for procrastinating from work or home chores), but actually getting away from the computer is really important too.

In the last week, I spent time with a newborn baby girl and her parents, saw family members we hadn’t seen in a year, and got to see the ocean, which we don’t get to see often either.

It was really nice to unplug. But the looks of my blog stats, it seems that many of you unplugged too!

We have four more trips to four cities before the summer ends, and I look forward to showing you pictures from each and unplugging over those weekends. I hope you are enjoying your summer and taking advantage of vacations, outdoors, and being with family and friends.

Beach trip with cousins

IMG_8173.JPG

We spent July 4 weekend in Destin with all the cousins on Jeffrey’s family’s side. There were 12 of us from Dallas, Austin, Houston, Birmingham and NYC. We ranged in age from 23-34 (I think.) There were 5 “in law” cousins and 7 originals.

IMG_8204.JPG

If you haven’t been reading my blog for too long, we go to Destin often. This trip was just the cousins, no parents! We’ll be back in three weeks with friends again!

IMG_8217.jpg

Side note–this was my first maxi dress! I thought short people couldn’t wear them, but then I found a good one! Different look for me.

You just can’t get tired of that view.

IMG_8218.JPG

I also rocked the horizontal stripes in a new Polo cover up from the outlet mall.

IMG_8235.jpg

And a hot orange strapless one-piece with optional neck strap. I realized it’s better to cover up and feel great then try to wear a two piece just because you think you’re supposed to.

I also spent most of my time in the shade. No sense burning my precious skin. I get very red splotchy.

IMG_8239.JPG

In the late afternoon, we had some active fun on the beach. There was jumping–that’s me and my sis-in-law.

IMG_8253.JPG

There was paddle ball.

IMG_8270.JPG

All the girl cousins on the last beach day.

IMG_8276.JPG

And all the cousins with the grandparents, they came to visit for an hour on the last night.

See ya, June

Well since it’s about to be a new month, how about a little look back at June. This month was pretty good, I discovered a few things I enjoy, traveled to a new place, and moved into my very first work office (with a door and walls!).

1. I re-discovered swimming! I can’t get enough. Well kind of, last week I swam three days! I am really enjoying it, find myself getting better, swimming longer, and not putzing with my goggles every lap. Little improvements…

2. I broke up with running. Why fight it, I’m just not that into it right now. When the weather gets cooler, I’m sure I’ll want to run again. But for now, it’s just not appealing. It’s hard to breathe and miserable outside with the humidity. And I found swimming!

3. I went on a bike ride. This is a big deal since I am previously scared of the bicycle. Now I want to move to a remote area, buy a bike, and train for a triathlon. Where did that come from? Since I will not be moving, I won’t be buying a bike, leaving me one leg short of a tri.

IMG_8101.JPG

4. I went sledding in June. Aspen, CO was a beautiful city. I want to go back for long periods of time every summer.

IMG_4453.JPG

For someone who isn’t training for a race like I was last year, I had a pretty active June. All of these activities were mixed with two days of CrossFit each week and a lot of walking around the Rice Loop or on the treadmill.
5. I cooked some great things for other people, like this Banana Bread. Also some summer salads too!

What did you love about June?

Snow in June

IMG_4439.JPG

For the last of the vacation posts, this one has some amazing scenes. We took the gondola to the top of Aspen Mountain and found so much snow! The temperature wasn’t too cold but snow was still on the ground. We went sledding in June! So glad I finally got to see snow this year.

IMG_4445.JPG

Seeing snow when it’s in the 50s on the top of a mountain is much cooler than sludge in your front yard. #fact

IMG_4453.JPG

We had some fun sledding over some moguls. The hardest part was climbing up the moguls in tennis shoes!

 IMG_4476.JPG

Then we walked around the top of the mountain snapping photos. The views are just amazing.

IMG_4478.JPG

Hi from Aspen.

 IMG_4451.JPG

One of the best pics. Tagged on Facebook as #nicetush.

That concludes pictures from Aspen. The other two posts are here and here. I am most sad that I won’t wear a jacket until November!

The sights of Aspen

IMG_4370.jpg

What a pretty town this is. We were in Aspen about a week before their peak summer season starts. It was great weather with cool mornings and warm afternoons. The sun was strong. We walked to restaurants and shops and along trails. We relaxed with books and walks through town. Here are some pics of the trip.

IMG_4361.JPG

We had dessert at a restaurant called “Junk.” It was comfort food served in quirky ways. We got a s’mores plate served on a block of wood. I think this pic is so cool with the fire on Shelley’s marshmallow.

IMG_4379.JPG

Also an ice cream sandwich. The ice cream was good, the cookie was too hard.

IMG_4382.JPG

How cool to live on the mountain like that? You know I don’t see mountains often.

IMG_4395.JPG

It seems that every weekend in the summertime, there is a festival or activity. This weekend was an outdoor expo with a race.

IMG_4397.JPG

At night, people go paragliding from the top of the mountain. Looks pretty scary! They looked like they were just hanging in place at times.

IMG_4371.JPG

Snow on the mountains! Way at the top.

IMG_4399.JPG

Big trees.

IMG_4402.JPG

Pretty flowers.

IMG_4405.JPG

Their biggest weekend is this coming weekend. The Food and Wine Classic. Big deal! Huge celebs. They start building the tents over a week ahead.

IMG_4406.JPG

I had some fun taking pictures of a fountain with different camera settings. A fast shutter speed makes a lot of difference!

IMG_4410.JPG

IMG_4414.JPG

Restaurants at the bottom of the mountain. Pretty great dining scenery. We ate here on the last night.

IMG_4415.JPG

Again, snow on the mountains!

One more Aspen post tomorrow, and one yesterday if you missed it!

Riding bikes in Aspen

IMG_8061.JPG

While in Aspen, my family did its first family bike ride! We aren’t really a cycling family. My dad bikes at home, my mom definitely doesn’t, and my sister is better than me, but Jeffrey and I don’t own bikes in Houston. I am actually scared of the bicycle since I don’t practice. I rode once three years ago in Kiawah Island, SC with my sister and it was just as scary then. Braking and turning aren’t my specialty.

IMG_8063.JPG

However, I did great! No falls, had fun, great views. Most importantly, didn’t fall off  cliff or run into people!

IMG_8080.JPG

Here are some pictures from our ride. We think it was about 15 miles through town and onto a trail along a river of roaring rapids.

IMG_8087.jpg

It was a lot of fun! But I’m not itching to buy a bike. Hot, humid city life isn’t a good place to ride, but at least I know how! It was even a gear shift bike.

IMG_8090.JPG

Jeffrey held the camera and biked and photographed. I just held on and said “whoa” a lot.

IMG_8095.JPG

The temperatures were perfect. Cool in the shade, hot in the sun. Got a lovely racerback tan on my back and on my arms.

IMG_8101.JPG

Glad I have more confidence. It was a great way to see the area faster than foot in areas you can’t see by car. I hope to continue a biking hobby on vacations in nice weather.

IMG_8103.jpg

It would be nice to live in a small town and bike around, but that’s not happening for us!

IMG_8065.JPG

IMG_8068.JPG

IMG_8075.JPG

That water is cold! 45 degrees we heard.

IMG_8078.JPG

This weekend I…

IMG_4361.JPG

Wore a jacket!

IMG_4364.JPG

Spent time in Aspen, CO with my family.

IMG_4365.jpg IMG_4370.jpg

Saw beautiful colors, mountains, clear skies, sunshine.

IMG_4374.JPG

I rode a bike! It was a big deal. Quite the fear of mine…and on cliffs over roaring rapids of 45 degree water.

IMG_8061.JPG

I also got a racerback tan on my back from being outside. I’m sure that won’t go away ’til January.

IMG_8065.JPG

Saw snow!

IMG_4417.JPG

More to come tomorrow…

What did you do this weekend?
