Mother/Daughter Weekend

IMG_1959.jpg

This past weekend, I did something very different. Nine women in my family, ages 16-79, from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Atlanta and LA all went to Greensboro, GA for a mother/daughter weekend. We just planned this a few months ago, and were all surprised it actually happened and everyone went.

IMG_8581.JPG

We were at a beautiful resort on Lake Oconee where we walked, sat by the pool, jet-skied, went on a pontoon boat ride, ate s’mores and just had a good time!

IMG_8582.JPG

We are so lucky to have done this and I hope we get to do it again and go back to Lake Oconee. It was beautiful and so fun.

IMG_1967.jpg

I loved the walks along this hilly trail through the tall trees. Our mornings were rushed and I didn’t get to walk a lot of minutes, but it was very beautiful and I hope to go back and walk longer on another cool day.

IMG_1968.JPG

All the ladies on the boat with the resort in the back.

There was this little one at home with his dad and doggy sister. Thursday-Sunday was the longest I had been away from him ever, but we FaceTimed and talked on the phone and sent pictures around. Thank goodness for technology! I was so happy to see him on Sunday afternoon.

However, not watching the clock for feedings every three hours was nice.

One more trip and then my travel until Thanksgiving is done!

Welcome to the Nursery

IMG_7337.jpg

Hello and welcome to Logan’s nursery! As you might remember, we didn’t know if Logan was a girl or a boy until he arrived. I planned his whole nursery to be gender neutral, and then we added some boy colors after he arrived.

I also realized that there is a good mix of something old, new, borrowed, and blue.

Old=the little white table next to the glider. It’s very helpful in holding lots of odds and ends I need close by during feedings, like the binder of feeding times, water bottle, phone, etc.

New=crib, dresser, glider, most things

Borrowed=well, passed down, the bookshelf

Blue=the wood board over his dresser

I love everything about his room, and I spent a lot of time researching furniture and choosing the big pieces. It’s a good thing because he and I spend a lot of time in there!

IMG_7334.JPG

Here are some pictures and a tour of his room. The other funny thing is that all of the furniture pieces we bought were without knowing the actual size of the room. Everything was ordered by the end of 2011, and we found our house in January. Good thing it all worked out! In reality, we knew we’d need a crib, glider and dresser, and the other pieces are decoration. And we knew the wall color would be painted to whatever we decided.

The paint color is a dark grey called Rocky Bluffs by Valspar. It is the darkest grey of all the shades in the house. I love it.

(Please ignore the TV below. We just moved it in there since feeding him takes a long time and I spend hours a day sitting in the chair. It’s helpful for me to pass the time! We’ll move it out when feedings speed up.)

IMG_7340.jpg

The furniture is all white. The crib is a spindle crib, his bedding is custom made with a green sheet, and a grey/white pattern for the bumpers and part of the crib skirt. Both crib and bedding are from a store called Doodles in Houston.

The dresser and glider are from Pottery Barn Kids. The little wood boards are from a store in Atlanta and a gift from my sister. I love them so much!

IMG_7339.jpg

The display shelf above is a piece from Jeffrey’s parents that we had in our old house. It’s not exactly “baby proofed,” so it might not stay once Logan starts crawling or pulling on things. It’s quite delicate with the glass shelves!

But for now, I like the antique looking touch and it holds a lot of his gifts!

IMG_7343.JPG

One of the last pieces we added were shelves on both sides of the crib. They are from The Container Store, and are two feet and three feet long. The letters above his crib are also from Doodles.

IMG_7350.JPG

Now you know where we spend a lot of our time!

Weekend

Sheesh it has been too many days since I last posted. Our little guy is almost four weeks old! We had a busy few days of a lot of family. Everyone on my mom’s side has met Logan now!

IMG_7143.JPG

The weekend was for Passover, but before that, we had many visitors come over, including my youngest cousin Rome, who was just as interested in Lily as Logan.

IMG_7163.JPG

My sister finally met Logan too, in town from Atlanta. She even held him in between holding Lily, her first love. She brought two cute onesies for Logan. Look out for them soon.

IMG_7171.jpg

And we got dressed for seder, Logan stayed home to sleep. Family pic!

IMG_7188.JPG

My mom got to give Logan a bottle, she’d been waiting and waiting for that!

IMG_7224.JPG

And since everyone came to Houston for Passover, a first, we took some casual family pics. All the cousins, including the newest one–Logan!

IMG_7255.JPG

Then all the parents and grandparents.

IMG_7262.JPG

And check out Lily looking at her brother. I think she’s saying “Is he leaving now?! Is it going to be quiet?”

IMG_7271.JPG

That’s it for the weekend. Back later this week with four week pics and an update! And maybe even some pictures of Logan’s room!

Baby Showered

IMG_6599.jpg

This past weekend was my one and only baby shower. We had so many family members in town from my side and Jeffrey’s. It was great to all be together for a low-key weekend getting ready for baby.

Below are Jeffrey’s sister, my sister, me, and my two cousins. We all live in different cities! Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, LA, Austin.

IMG_6703.JPG

There were Crave Cupcakes on  Friday night. Strawberry is still my favorite flavor of them all!

IMG_6581.JPG

Then on Saturday afternoon, it was my shower. I got a haircut too! I think it is a little too short, but luckily my hair has been growing like weeds and it will be longer in no time.

IMG_6601.jpg

Since we don’t know what the sex of the baby is, there were lovely yellow and white flowers and colored cookie party favors. Just my style!

IMG_6611.jpg

We had a cute tea party at Neiman Marcus hosted by about a dozen of my friends. It was so fun and so me.

IMG_6620.JPG

My sister and Jeffrey’s sister played a little game where they asked me questions that Jeffrey already answered to see if we match. Like “who will change more diapers?” Very cute. We did pretty good.

IMG_6624.JPG

I got very practical and necessary gifts like the car seat, stroller, and video monitor. And some fun ones like this.

IMG_6630.jpg

Then there was another family dinner so the boys and Lily could come too.

IMG_6652.JPG

And finally, some time to relax for the pregnant lady to put her feet up!

IMG_6666.JPG

That’s it for this week!

Tips for Traveling While Pregnant

Over the first 30 weeks of my pregnancy, we traveled a lot by plane and by car. It’s not unusual for us before we got pregnant to be gone a couple of weekends a month…every month. Holidays, weddings, football games, visiting family keep us on the move. So when we got pregnant, we didn’t really slow down!

In the first trimester, we flew to Florida twice, drove to Dallas once, drove to Austin once, and flew to Laguna Beach (it was a terrible trip coming home with an extra night spent in LA, a 5 a.m. wake up, and a day spent at the airport for nothing, but otherwise fun!).

In the second trimester, we flew to Chicago, Birmingham, Atlanta and drove to Austin and San Antonio once each.

And in the third trimester, we flew to Florida and drove to Austin.

That is 12 trips in a period of 6 months.

IMG_5697.JPG

I don’t really have wise words, but I did a few things each time to make it a little easier on me while traveling.

1. Carry snacks–nothing new here, I always have snacks. But for all of these trips, I really made sure I liked my snacks and ate them on the planes, at airports and while we were gone. Favorites were:

  • 18 Rabbits granola bars (I used to pack Larabars but I can’t even think about their texture anymore)
  • dried fruit with nuts, especially apricots
  • an apple for a snack the same day we traveled
  • peanut butter crackers (always in my purse, always)
  • dry cereal for breakfasts (to go with yogurts below or I can find a milk)

1 a. We also started traveling on car trips with a small cooler of cheese, yogurts and cold water. And I request a fridge at hotels at no charge. Highly recommend doing this!

2. Get an aisle seat–Usually our trips aren’t that long and I don’t mind the middle if Jeffrey is on the aisle. But the new rule became this: “If you have a baby in the tummy, you get the aisle.” Sometimes we each had an aisle, but sometimes Jeffrey got the middle. Sorry! It really did help to have extra leg room to stretch into the aisle and it made it easier for frequent potty breaks. Doctors orders are to get up and stretch!

3. Eat before you leave–We luckily didn’t have flights too early, but in the very beginning, I had to eat something within a few minutes of waking to avoid nausea.

4. Carry on a good lunch–Twice while traveling on airplanes, I picked up a delicious falafel wrap from Whole Foods and ate it at the airport. It was sooo much better than anything I would have found, and so much more filling. Can’t eat deli meats while prego, remember. Doesn’t leave a lot of choices at an airport when you’re in a small terminal with just a Subway and Starbucks and you need some protein. Before car trips, I would eat a good sandwich too. You learn that letting yourself get hungry is when nausea sets in, especially in the beginning.

5.While in your visiting town, build in some afternoon time to rest! Even though your head is telling you that you can go-go-go like you used to, your body will need a break. You have to literally put your feet up, take a snooze if you are a napper, or just watch TV for a short while before your night activities. The worst thing is to overdo it, then you’re no good to anyone.

6. Drink your water! Dehydration is also a big no-no and can be real bad when traveling, so you have to drink up. Lack of fluids and lack of protein are the reasons you get lightheaded or nauseous. Cheese, nuts, hummus, lean proteins are all things you can snack on and are portable.

7. Take your potty breaks. Your head can tell you that you don’t need to pee every 30 minutes, but your body will say not so, especially later on. It’s no fun when the flight attendant won’t let you get up while the door is closed but you haven’t taken off yet. Always go when you can!

We had a busy season of travel, and I’m glad I felt good the whole time, especially in the beginning! I’m also very glad it’s over and we are home. It’s a little nerve wrecking to be away from home, I never slept great, and it’s tiring.

It was also a little sad to know that air and car travel will never be so simple again for us!

2011: Looking Back

With just a few days left in 2011, I wanted to look back at some of my personal highlights of the year. 2011 was a great year! We took some great trips to new places for me (Aspen, Chicago, Atlanta, Long Island), along with other trips to places we’d been, we got pregnant, and I even ran some short races last Spring.

(man to be  skinny again)

IMG_7934.JPG

I started a new job last April and really enjoy it and my new routine.

And I continued to cook up tasty treats in the kitchen. Highlights include challah, pizza and our first apple pie.

IMG_5041.JPG

IMG_4326.JPG

I had my most viewed day on the blog on March 1, 2011 when a Zucchini Bread was featured by a big vegan blog.

Lily kept us busy and in shape making us chase her up and down our three story house all day long. She will be two in a few weeks! Then she’ll become a big sister and not be the only center of attention. 2012 might be a rough one for her.new lily.jpg

We have high hopes for a great 2012 too! New baby, hopefully a new house, and probably a new car. Better start saving our pennies.

IMG_4365.jpg

And as for this blog, 2010 and the beginning of 2011 was definitely about growth each month, and then my numbers dropped some but loyal readers stayed. I’ll continue to write if you continue to read. The posts turned into less about my everyday life and training for a race and more about special recipes or stories. I hope it still is a nice little break to entertain and educate you, and I always appreciate having readers! Even if I post less frequently as I slow down over the next few weeks and become occupied with real life, I am sure that I won’t give it up and will still post.

Thanks for reading, and see you in the new year!

Pregnancy Update Week 25

IMG_6134.jpg

Hello at Week 25 and welcome to December! I am really happy to check off another month on our calendar and feel like March is getting closer. I cannot believe we are almost in the 3rd trimester!

This week, Baby Center says we are the size of a rutabaga (google it). The baby is over 13 inches long and around 1.5 lbs in weight. As I say every week, wow, that is getting big! I am too.

(picture above is Thanksgiving Day and Week 24, picture below is Week 25).

I missed an update last week because of Thanksgiving, and I don’t think I ever updated on here about my progress at the doctor’s office the week before. At my 23 week check up, I had gained 6 lbs in a month! While that is a lot in four weeks time, it is a common time period of growth and still very normal. Just explains why I started to feel very large. That puts my overall weight gain at 12 lbs. Probably more now that it’s two weeks later. Everything else was really great and on track, and I am really happy with how my body is handling pregnancy.

IMG_6099.JPG

I am still feeling very good and mostly normal. We had a lot of travel in the last two weeks. There was a weekend in Atlanta, two nights at home, and then two nights away for Thanksgiving. Now we are home for a few days before our next trip for another wedding.

Travel is wearing on me more than it used to. It is a little harder to get comfortable on airplanes, and I don’t enjoy hotel beds. Luckily, I still sleep great at home. Packing is also different too. I have to make sure clothes will fit!

IMG_6133.jpg

Exercise clothes have still been particularly hard to find. I had good luck at Gap Maternity with two pair of sweat pants that I wear for everything–around the house, travel, walk Lily, and exercise. Workout tops are more difficult to find. I actually only have two right now that I like–one from Gap Maternity but it only comes in black, and one from Lululemon that I bought two sizes bigger. I’m trying to not buy non-maternity clothes in bigger sizes because I don’t want to be stuck with too-big clothes after, but I am getting my money’s worth out of this top. And I miss shopping for normal clothes a lot.

(can someone please teach Jeffrey how to take a non-blurry picture with an iPhone?)

I also bought two long sleeved exercise shirts in XL from Sports Authority for walking outside. Hope those fit for a while!

Other notable things from the last two weeks–lots of movements, lots of decisions made, and just feeling bigger all the time. I sometimes say “wow” at myself in the mirror, getting bigger all over isn’t the greatest! Also still have good energy in the kitchen, which is great because it’s cookie month!

To end on a positive note–our cute family at Thanksgiving.

What’s the story, morning glory?

IMG_3561.JPG

The story of this muffin started with a walnut. From the baby shower I hosted last weekend, there were a whole lot of walnuts left over from the ice cream bar. I usually don’t cook with walnuts because I have a lot of pecans in the freezer from Christmastime. Pecans are more “Texas,” and a common nut to gift and receive at the holidays.

IMG_3569.JPG

First, I had the walnuts I wanted to play with, and second, my sister wanted me to bake her something to bring to her this weekend. She’s graduating from UNC’s School of Public Health with her Master’s in Hospital Administration. What an accomplishment! I guess I can bake her and her friends some muffins since they will one day be CEOs of major hospitals in this country. I hope they remember me. She’ll be moving to Atlanta if anyone wants to be her friend!

That is how it was born to make a muffin using walnuts.

The next part was what else do I use? Besides flours, sugars, etc., this muffin needed an identity. I bought a bag of carrots and was going to make a carrot walnut muffin, so I started Googling that. And then I found morning glories. Oh man. The morning glory. I remember those! There is a bakery in Dallas called Celebrity Cafe that used to have the best morning glory muffins. Once I remembered that, I was set on making it.

IMG_3585.JPG

Morning Glory Muffins

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 C whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1/2 C white sugar
  • 1/4 C brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 C canola oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 apple, peeled cored and diced
  • 1/2 C raisins
  • 1/2 C carrots, shredded
  • 1/2 C walnuts, chopped
  • 1/4 C plus 2 T sweetened coconut

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350*. In a small bowl, combine the wet ingredients and set aside (eggs, oil, vanilla)
  • On your cutting board or in a bowl, set aside apple, raisins, coconut (except the 2T), carrots and walnuts.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients (flour, sugars, baking soda, cinnamon, salt).
  • Add wet to dry and stir well. I did not use an electric mixer at all, but you could. I just used a large spoon for the whole recipe.
  • Fold in apple, carrot, walnut, raisins and coconut. Mix well.
  • Spoon into a muffin tin, sprayed with cooking spray. Fill 3/4 full.
  • Sprinkle on remaining 2 T coconut. Just a few pieces per muffin is good.
  • Bake for about 25 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

Notes:

  • Mine made 11 muffin cups. I think if you used an electric mixer, it may fluff up the batter and you can get an extra muffin. If I make these again, I would try an electric mixer.
  • Also, I checked the muffins at about 13 minutes because the tops looked golden brown. The inside wasn’t cooked at all, so beware the tops will cook quicker than the rest. For the second half of cooking, I put the muffins on a lower rack in the oven. Next time, I will lower the rack before I start.

Monsters, Balls, 3 Ingredient Soup

Happy birthday to my sister, Shelley! She is in her second year of her Master’s in Hospital Administration program at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and just found out that she’s moving to Atlanta in June for a two year fellowship at Emory. Way to go, Shelley. A fun added birthday celebration. Now we know who gets the bragging attention next week at Thanksgiving.

(Lily has since had her bangs trimmed)

There are only eight days until Thanksgiving! Then the madness of holiday shopping, continuous cool weather (we hope) and busy weekends of travel commence. And the looming half marathon that I’m not thinking about until my poor IT band heals…

Until then, let’s eat clean before the temptations start.

Green Monsters:

The blog world loves their green monsters, and if you haven’t tried it, you should to see what the hype is about. I have tried various additions and quantities, I’ve tried freezing them to defrost later, and played with lots of colored monsters. But in my opinion, the best tasting and prettiest monster is the original.

Basic Green Monster:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 C any milk
  • 2 C spinach

Blend, add ice, blend again, enjoy.

IMG_7334.JPG

Other monsters:

If you’re interested in more green monsters, check out the Green Monster Movement. I like to drink my monsters with a PB&J Sandwich for lunch or a light dinner. The monsters are quite filling and refreshing.

IMG_7335.JPG

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Balls:

When I was in San Francisco for Foodbuzz Fest, one of the vendors at the Tasting Pavilion was Annie the Baker who made cookie dough balls of different flavors. They were all the rage, so of course, someone was going to replicate them at home. Mama Pea was the first at it, and then everyone made them within a day. Here are mine, and they are really really good. Approval by Jeffrey too! Click here for full recipe on her site.

Here are the changes I made: I un-veganized them because I don’t have vegan ingredients. So I used real butter (well, a stick of Fleischman’s margarine), regular chocolate chips and peanut butter chips. When I went to scoop out the balls to bake, the dough was very crumbly, so I put it back under the mixer and added 1/4 C water. It worked perfect, and the crumbles became dough.

3 Ingredient Soup: Tomato Soup with Tortellini and Broccoli

This is not really a recipe, but it was a healthful, colorful, and fast way to eat at home. We recently found Wolfgang Puck organic canned soups, and they are really tasty! We like the Country Tomato with Basil that has little chunks of tomatoes and tastes good as homemade.

I heated up the soup, and at the same time, I boiled water for Buitoni 3-cheese whole wheat tortellini. And at the same time, I microwaved fresh broccoli to steam it. When everything was cooked, I added it to the soup pot to stir together and heat for a minute.

Voila, a one bowl 3 ingredient soup.

Wedding in Alabama

This past weekend, Jeffrey and I went to a wedding in Birmingham, AL for a friend from college, and also spent time with his extended family. We did get a short chance to go for a walk through Birmingham’s major hills compared to flat Houston. They are tough. Can’t help but think how their locals are in such great shape from just walking the dog! We love visiting Birmingham and their cute neighborhoods.

Here are some pictures from the wedding. I love weddings. Stacy looked beautiful all weekend, and her wedding dress was stunning!

Congrats to Stacy and Justin and thank you for letting us be part of your weekend!!
