First birthday party

Planning Logan’s first birthday party was one of the most fun and crafy activities I have done to date. I began thinking of ideas and bookmarking some ideas I liked around October, and decided on a theme/colors/venue shortly after. We had his party at the Bellaire Nature Discovery Center on a Saturday morning. We were very lucky with perfect weather, as it poured rain and was very cold the next morning.

Here are some details:

Food–we had Shipley’s donuts, chocolate and plain glazed. Also a bowl of apples, bananas and clementine oranges. We had snack bags for kids and adults that said “Have a snack with Logan” on labels I made from a Post it pack I bought a few months ago. We had a tub of small waters and apple juices, and a big jug of orange juice.

The cake and cupcakes were from Indulge Baking Co., and matched Logan’s shirt and the banners.

The shirt and matching bib were from my Dallas friend Gretchen. Hi!

Decorations–I made two banners by hand. I cut and glued and laminated all myself. It was really fun. The monthly pics banner was very long, with 13 photos. The “Logan is One” banner was a second thought after I had leftover paper and wanted another banner. It also helped bring the colors together again. Thank goodness his name isn’t longer than five letters!

Then I had another idea after I saw a similar poster on this blog post. I was mildly obsessed with figuring out how to replicate this for about a week. She used Photoshop, but I made mine in Word. I downloaded a chalkboard jpeg, then downloaded some of the free fonts and typed in white on the chalkboard. It turned out really awesome, in my opinion. Then I sent it to a local printer who printed it on foam matting and I displayed it on an easel. I love it still.

IMG_9332.jpg

For activities at the party, we had a bunny read a story and then the kids could pet it. Her name was coincidentally Lily. We also brought some blow up sports balls and had some plastic clappers and sunglasses on the picnic tables.

For party favors, we had a minor dispute about these. I wanted to write names on water bottles with curly straws I saw at Party City, but they turned out too ugly for Jeffrey, and he recommended we do something else. He found some glass tiny milk jars that we filled with colored goldfish and came with a personalized label. They turned out very cute. And my mom added some shovels and rakes for kids to take home.

I was so happy with how it turned out, and very proud of myself for being so crafty.

Now onto planning Jeffrey’s 30th birthday in May!

Easy Eats

photo 3.jpg

I have gotten a few comments that I don’t post like I used to about recipes and trials in the kitchen. I am sure you can understand that I don’t have the same kind of free time, and that cooking is often done in a hurry and eaten just as fast. I rarely get out the big camera to take 50 pictures of a plate of food and move it around our living room to try different backgrounds and angles of light.

However, since it sounds like you all used to like those posts, I’m going to try to post some recipes or at least links to recipes if I don’t create them myself. A lot of things I already posted about a year or two years ago, so I’ll just link back to those posts.

To start, over the weekend I made a pumpkin ginger loaf. I made the same one last year and the year before, but this time I didn’t add the pumpkin butter layer in the middle and on top. I just didn’t buy it this year to not have one more spread to use. I really like this recipe because of all the gingerbread-like spices and think it is pretty healthy. It is always popular around my house.

photo 1.jpg

Next up is acorn squash. I try to make a squash once or twice each Fall/Winter season because I find them so seasonal and tasty and filling. However, they are very tough to cut! I make sure to only do it when someone is home to cut it for me. Ever tried a butternut squash? That is even more dangerous.

For this year’s acorn squash, I did the following:

  • Cut squash in half, spoon out seeds and strings
  • Cut a little off the stumps so it will sit in a pan with cut side up
  • Add a spoonful or so of butter/margarine, brown sugar and salt
  • Lay in a baking dish with a shallow layer of water and bake at 400* until fork tender, about 35-45 minutes
  • Add additional salt and brown sugar or maple syrup and enjoy!

If I planned a little better, you could stuff your squash with a grain like rice, quinoa, cranberries, nuts, etc. It was just me eating this, so I just had it as a side vegetable with an Amy’s frozen burrito and lettuce. Exciting when you eat alone!

photo 2.jpg

On Monday night, I had an ambitious dinner planned for a weekday. I made a sausage stuffing that we liked last year. It took a while to chop veggies, which I did earlier in the afternoon, and then it took a while to saute them and cook the whole thing together. We probably didn’t bake it long enough because the bread wasn’t crispy, but we were hungry! Do this on a Sunday.

photo 1.JPG

I served our stuffing (which is a heavy dish of sausage, veggies and sourdough bread) with cranberry sauce and lettuce. Lettuce because I didn’t have time for another dish but still wanted something green! And the stuffing had a lot of veggies.

Weekend

IMG_2170.JPG

We had another nice weekend at home. We all had Shabbat dinner together on Friday night, Lily too, and Logan spent the night with his Houston grandparents. I really like this picture above. It is so typical of us right now. I’m sitting on the floor, Lily is nervous and on my lap, Logan is standing and looking cute as usual.

IMG_2162.jpg

Lily had a fun Halloween and enjoyed trick or treating in our new neighborhood.

IMG_2177.JPG

On Saturday, we had a wedding that was very pretty! We were home by 11:15 p.m., which was nice since it was daylight savings and we anticipated an early wake-up call. Babies don’t understand the extra hour.

IMG_2179.JPG

Fun to get dressed up!

IMG_2182.jpg

I also planned our meals for the week. Since it is my favorite season and month for foods, I decided it’s time to try some holiday favorites like cranberry sauce, pumpkin loaf and stuffing. I made the pumpkin loaf on Friday, and hope to do the others this week.

  • Monday: Sausage stuffing with Kale Chips and Cranberry Sauce
  • Tuesday: Leftovers or something frozen from Trader Joe’s we already have
  • Wednesday: Walnut crusted chicken from Rachael Ray Magazine with green salad
  • Thursday: Jeffrey on own, Marci out

Thoughts from the week

20121016-144221.jpg

Someone is learning how to stand. So far, he hasn’t actually pulled himself up to standing, but if I prop him on the tuffet or holding onto the railings in his crib, he can stand on his own. Pretty impressive. Remember when he couldn’t even lift his body and flopped on his tummy?

20121016-144233.jpg

He helped his dad with his work over the weekend. Logan says he did a good job and is billing his time too at three extra milk bottles per day.

20121016-144242.jpg

Over the weekend, I spent some time cooking. On Friday, I planned a home cooked dinner for two. I went to the grocery, bought fresh shrimp for an Avocado Pesto pasta with shrimp a la Giada. We made it once before and both liked it. Then, Jeffrey didn’t come home until late, and I made the dinner for myself, ate alone, and cleaned it up alone. Oh well!

20121016-144250.jpg

I also made these No-bake Peanut Butter Chocolate Balls that I can keep frozen, which I always write about as a way to have homemade sweets but not be tempted by them. They are too cute, and I think a Weight Watchers recipe. I found it in my big recipe binder. I’ll post the recipe soon. I really like them.

And to hold us accountable because I write about planning, we planned our week of dinners to make us eat at home more than not. Here’s what we planned:

  • Sunday:  Turkey burgers with caramelized onions, Alexia fries, peas. Recipe from Everyday With Rachael Ray. I jazzed it up by buying Whole Foods guacamole and two cornbread muffins.
  • Monday: Leftovers, plus green salad
  • Tuesday: Trader Joe’s frozen meat lasagna
  • Wednesday: Ina Garten frittata and green salad
  • Thursday: pick up
  • Friday: out to dinner
  • Saturday: birthday party

I know I  have written before, but planning is really important to getting it right for the week. I do enjoy cooking, but I don’t enjoy figuring out what to make, especially if it’s going to take a long time and be messy at the end of the day. I also don’t enjoy grocery shopping multiple times each week, so I am trying to plan better.

I am also back on the breakfast bandwagon of hard boiled eggs (6 made on Sunday) and a muffin (from the freezer, made ahead) with fruit, all taken to work and prepped the night before.

What are your planning tricks and go-to meals to make at home?

Weekend in Dallas, Part 1

This weekend, we were in Dallas for a wedding and to visit my parents. Logan and I stayed until Tuesday because he and I are off school/work for Sukkot. On Saturday, it rained all.day.long. From the second we woke until the next day, it rained and rained. Luckily, it never thundered, so Lily wasn’t her crazy self. Also, the rain brought in some much cooler temps. Hooray for Fall! It is my favorite season of the year.

20121001-041312.jpg

Logan even needed a little jacket for his walks. He still loves to be outside. We got all dressed up for a wedding. Pardon all the iPhone pics, it’s just so easy, and I didn’t bring my computer with me to upload.

20121001-041415.jpg

End of the night pic. Little did we know that Logan would wake up when we got home after midnight for an hour, and then wake up at 5:16 a.m. for the day. He has been majorly teething, and it is really affecting his sleep! He cut two bottom teeth a few weeks ago, and now has three on top and we think one more on bottom coming in. Teething is no joke, it’s like a nonstop head cold with a runny nose, extra fussiness and pain.

20121001-041453.jpg

Since he loves the outdoors and the temps were cooler, he took a few naps outside! They started in the car and then we moved him to the covered porch. At home, we would probably try to move him to his crib, but on vacation, we will allow a carseat nap.

20121001-041507.jpg

In other news, I am really liking the Nike + Running app for iPhone. I know this is not new, but I think it’s accurate for distance and pace. I used to use a Garmin FR 60, but realized it was never calibrated correctly and I stopped using it. This app is free but you have to exercise with your phone. I walked one morning last week for 3 miles with Logan, and in Dallas I “wogged” for 3.4 miles in 45 minutes. It is definitely the furthest distance I have run post-baby. Yay for cooler temps. Hoping to work on my pace and distance when I can get out in cooler weather.

Back soon with pictures from the Chihuly exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum.

Mother/Daughter Weekend

IMG_1959.jpg

This past weekend, I did something very different. Nine women in my family, ages 16-79, from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Atlanta and LA all went to Greensboro, GA for a mother/daughter weekend. We just planned this a few months ago, and were all surprised it actually happened and everyone went.

IMG_8581.JPG

We were at a beautiful resort on Lake Oconee where we walked, sat by the pool, jet-skied, went on a pontoon boat ride, ate s’mores and just had a good time!

IMG_8582.JPG

We are so lucky to have done this and I hope we get to do it again and go back to Lake Oconee. It was beautiful and so fun.

IMG_1967.jpg

I loved the walks along this hilly trail through the tall trees. Our mornings were rushed and I didn’t get to walk a lot of minutes, but it was very beautiful and I hope to go back and walk longer on another cool day.

IMG_1968.JPG

All the ladies on the boat with the resort in the back.

There was this little one at home with his dad and doggy sister. Thursday-Sunday was the longest I had been away from him ever, but we FaceTimed and talked on the phone and sent pictures around. Thank goodness for technology! I was so happy to see him on Sunday afternoon.

However, not watching the clock for feedings every three hours was nice.

IMG_1970.JPG

One more trip and then my travel until Thanksgiving is done!

Sip’n and See’n

IMG_8168.JPG

Two weekends ago we went to Dallas for a long weekend. I am from Dallas and had been away from the city for 13 months. It was my longest time to be away from Dallas in my whole life, probably by months and months. We see my parents plenty often in Houston or on trips, but I just hadn’t been home in that long. And Logan had many people wanting to meet him.

IMG_8119.JPG

On a Thursday, Logan and I took a flight by ourselves to Dallas. Being that it was a one hour flight, it was just fine. He happily took a bottle that lasted most of the flight and then he jumped on my lap and smiled at people. Jeffrey and Lily joined us by car on Thursday night.

IMG_8141.JPG

Then Logan made himself right at home with the slew of toys and clothes that my mom had waiting for him. We had a little party for him on Saturday that we mistakenly put during his afternoon nap time. We planned the party back in June, and I didn’t really know when he would nap. He was a trooper and was very fun and happy.

IMG_1794.jpg

Then on Sunday we drove back to Houston, which was our first long car trip together. We left after his 10 a.m. bottle and stopped once at 1 p.m. to feed him again, then kept going. He slept parts of the drive, but not really long stretches. Then he slept great that night since he had such a busy weekend.

IMG_8178.jpg

Little boy needed his beauty rest too. He held onto his new football the whole time. We’ll be back in Dallas at the end of September and hope to have more fun again then!

IMG_1796.jpg

Five Months

Five months seems like we are really well into this baby thing. Logan is definitely becoming less of a baby and more of a little boy. His personality is really developing and he is so much fun. He is cooing and babbling more, smiling all the time, and crying a whole lot less than when he was an itty bitty baby. It is rare now that we are stumped with what is wrong or what we can do to make him happy. There are few things he dislikes, and he is exploring more all the time.

IMG_8075.jpg

In the last month, so much has changed! We had a great trip to Florida with friends, and just this past weekend we went to Dallas. Logan is now “sleep trained” and we are all sleeping great at night. He even has better naps and is happier overall during the day.

IMG_1717.jpg

He started sitting in his stroller facing forward without the car seat adapter, we opened up the BOB stroller for future longer walks when the weather gets nicer, and he started loving his Jumperoo. It’s his favorite thing right now. We also opened up the high chair, but haven’t used it yet, or started solids, but that’s another story.

IMG_8085.JPG

He smiles all the time, talks, pays attention to books, to me when I talk to him, and always follows me around a room with his eyes.

IMG_8088.JPG

At his last doctor’s appointment at 4.5 months old, he weighed 16 lbs, 11 ounces and was 25 inches tall. He was in the 75% for weight and 40% for height. Sounds about right!

IMG_8101.jpg

Lily is also doing well with her new brother. She still watches him, sits by him, and sits with us when he gets a bottle. We all take walks together, and she is very sweet to him. Mostly, she loves his toys.

IMG_8105.JPG

This next one is a big one (aren’t they all?). Logan goes to school and mommy goes back to work!

Weekend

photo 1.jpg

We had a great weekend at home. We solved our sleep problem and all had some nice, restful nights. More on that later this week. I even baked some scones and we cooked dinner on Sunday night for friends. We took a family trip to Central Market on Saturday and Logan loved it. He is becoming less of a baby and more of a little boy. It’s a lot of fun now!

photo 2.jpg

So glad I made some time for baking. I had no occasion for these, but just felt like cooking something sweet. It was this recipe, Orange Chocolate Chip Scones, that I last made almost a year ago in circle form this time instead of triangle. I also made some little raw chocolate chip bites to keep in the freezer for snacks or dessert.

photo 3.JPG

On Saturday night, we went to the Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw concert called Brothers of the Sun Tour. It was really fun and they are awesome entertainers.  They each played over 90 minutes separately and then a few songs together. Really cool. They are two of my favorite country stars and I remember listening to Tim’s CD in my Jeep when I was 16. Long time ago!

photo 4.jpg

That is Kenny being lifted over the crowd to the stage. Amazing how no one uses real cameras anymore, just iPhones.

Hard to believe summer is about over! We have one more weekend trip this weekend and then I go back to work and Logan goes to school. I really can’t believe it’s been almost five months and the time has come to go back!

Baby’s first beach trip

IMG_1690.jpg

Last Wednesday, we headed to Destin, FL for a little family beach trip with friends. It was Logan’s first trip to Florida, second trip on a plane, and first time to the ocean. By 4.5 months old, he has already been to the mountains and ocean! Not too shabby.

IMG_7973.JPG

Logan really enjoyed the sights and sounds and was a very good boy. He likes facing forward in the Bjorn so he can look around.

IMG_7974.JPG

We borrowed some toys from Jeffrey’s cousins who drove their baby toys down from Birmingham last week. Very helpful for us! He was right at home. We rented a crib, and I shipped a box of miscellaneous items like diapers, wipes, a bath sponge to lay him on, crib sheet, lotions, etc. Also a good idea so I didn’t have to take up suitcase room. It was a pretty easy trip to pack him for–lots of summer onesies, bathing suits, nightgowns and toys.

IMG_7995.JPG

Logan seemed very relaxed and slept very well while we were there too. He slept one night his longest stretch ever of almost 12 hours, but hasn’t done it again or come close. He ate well, napped well, was happy and not too fussy.

IMG_1698.jpg

He went swimming in the pool a few afternoons, got to drive around and go shopping a little, and put his toes in the water. He actually spent most of the day in the condo because I wanted his naps on schedule, and he still naps best when swaddled in his crib. We took turns staying upstairs with him. It was rainy two afternoons so it wasn’t too bad.

IMG_8013.JPG

On our third day, we went to Seaside (the cutest town ever), and he took two naps in his car seat and was very good. It is amazing how much more confident we are to take care of him, travel, go on outings for hours, etc. by ourselves in a few short months.

IMG_1700.jpg

When we got back, the sun was still out and Logan put his toes in the water. He wasn’t so sure about it.

IMG_1709.jpg

It was really fun to take him to the beach for the first time, and we know each time he goes, he will have more and more fun and become a true beach baby. Until next time!
